In one respect, Cooper wasn’t too concerned about being followed. After all, he’d behaved provocatively at the company in order to see how they would respond, and their behaviour had told him they had something to hide. It was only natural they’d dispatch a team to monitor his movements around the city. But he needed to keep the next phase of his plan hidden. If they knew that he’d persuaded both Leah and Talia to help him in his search for Freddy, they’d cast their net wider to include both women. He couldn’t allow that to happen.

He emerged from the building, crossed the road and headed down a narrow street in the direction of the local farmers’ market, which Leah had assured him would be in full swing at this time of the morning. He walked at a moderate pace, fast enough to jolt the surveillance team into action, but not so fast that they’d worry he was trying to get away from them. At least not yet. He took a sharp left down an alleyway and popped out onto a wide, pedestrianised street, a colourful banner above his head informing locals of an upcoming theatre production of ‘Death of a Salesman’.

The wooden trestle tables on either side of the street were groaning with local produce, from organic cherries to bags of wild za’atar. A busker sang Israeli settler songs on his guitar to a small audience. Cooper stopped to browse at a stall selling handmade leather bags before continuing on his way.

Crowded spaces are difficult for surveillance teams to cover. It’s hard to keep your target in line of sight, especially if they look like most of the other people in the crowd, and if they turn off down a side street, you can waste valuable seconds fighting your way through the bodies to get back into position behind them. The only solution is to get your operatives up close behind the target.

Cooper knew this better than anyone. Without turning to look, he was able to discern a young man with three days’ worth of stubble pushing his way in his direction. The other issue for the surveillance team was profile. The shoppers milling around Cooper were mostly retired, since it was a regular workday. They were the sort of people who carried cloth tote bags, wore sandals and bought organic food. The young man pushing through the crowd, however, looked as though he had just stepped out of a military boot camp.

Cooper paused at a stall to try a glass of sahlab. The operative following him was carried past Cooper by the dense crowd, and by the time he’d managed to work his way to the side and steal a glance behind him, Cooper had disappeared from sight.

Cooper was already twenty feet away, in a warren of alleyways, and moving quickly, turning left and then right to ensure that anyone following him would have to break cover and start running. Before long, he heard the sound of footsteps
